Nipple shields should rarely be used, but if you are going to use one, you should know how to properly apply it. Watch the video to learn the appropriate technique. Be sure to watch to the end of the video.
If using a feeding tube with the nipple shield, do not poke it through the holes of the nipple shield as that can be very dangerous for your baby:
The tubing will cause the holes to open further than intended.
If you forget to pull the tubing back into the nipple shield you will be pushing milk or formula directly down the back of your baby's throat, causing choking and possible pneumonia.
If you forget to pull the tubing back into the nipple shield your baby can be scratched in the eye with it while latching causing damage to the eye.
Threading a feeding tube through the holes can also cause the nipple shield to lose suction to the breast which will cause leakage of milk, poor milk transfer from the breast, and possible nipple pain. This also happens if you stretch the nipple shield while applying. Wetting the nipple shield prior to application can cause the nipple shield to slide and lose suction so is therefore not recommended.
Whether you use a contact nipple shield or regular nipple shield is a personal choice. Application remains the same.
If using a nipple shield with a late preterm infant (baby born between 34 weeks gestation and the end of 36 weeks gestation) be sure to only use one that has been researched to show positive milk transfer in this age group. At this point, only Medela 24 mm(medium) nipple shields fit this category. If anyone knows of more current research, please be sure to message me so I can update this. I have no financial affilliation with Medela.
Be sure to work with a lactation specialist if you are using a nipple shield to help you remedy the reason for needing one in the first place.
